By the year 2000 there were still 2.6 billon people without safe sanitation and 1.1 billion people living without safe drinking water. After almost 40 years, the health of impoverished rural families has failed to improve significantly, and today approximately 800,000 children in Africa alone, still die each year due to diarrhoeal diseases associated with poor hygiene, unsafe water and no sanitation (WHO, 2002).
