6. Prevent Dehydration


By the end of this session participants will know 

  • How to recognise  signs of dehydration
  • How to make Sugar/Salt Solution correctly 
  • How to ensure baby does not die when dehydrated.
  • To know when a baby needs to go to the clinic

For this lesson have the following available

  • A teaspoon
  • A knife
  • A clean empty jug
  • Boiled Water in a 1 litre coke bottle 
  • Sugar 
  • Salt

 Print each picture on  A4 paper. 

Fold each paper in half and laminate.

Print out  one page Facilitator Guide.

How to make SSS
Sugar Salt Solution
  1. A dehydrated baby
  2. Boil waster and wash 1 litre bottle
  3. Add 8 flat teaspoons of sugar
  4. Add 1/2 flat teaspoon of salt
  5. Pour into bottle and cool
  6. Give a teaspoon to baby every 10 minutes
  7. Or use Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) from Clinic
  8. Wash breasts before feeding
  9. Continue breastfeeding as normal
  10. If no recovery in 24 hours go to Clinic
